Ian McShane doesn't need make-up for Pirates of Caribbean

As the smooth-talking antiques dealer Lovejoy, Ian McShane was a housewives’ favourite.

But there is nothing smooth about the actor these days.

At 68, McShane’s beard is greying and his face shows the ravages of time.

And with a pair of glasses strung around his neck as he strolled through the airport in Los Angeles, the former alcoholic’s look was more ageing uncle than TV heart throb.

The actor looked more than a little dishevelled as he walked through the terminal sporting wild, scraggly hair.

  • A grand day out: Peter Andre takes his children to Chessington World Of Adventures - and films it all for his TV show

Ian perhaps didn't get much sleep on his long-haul flight, and had deep dark circles under his eyes.

Thankfully, the actor left his pirate's hat and sword on set, and settled for jeans, a black hooded jumper and a jacket for his flight.

Production is almost complete on Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which  premieres in the UK on May 18.

The film follows Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) as they embark on a quest to find the elusive Fountain of Youth on behalf of the king, only to discover Blackbeard and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz) are after it too.

Original stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom will not join Depp and Rush in this film, but according to Depp, the forthcoming film aims to attract new fans to the franchise.

'What's most interesting about Pirates 4 is you don't have to connect
the dots for these subplots and sub-characters,' he told USA Today.  'It
felt like a fresh, clean slate.'

McShane has just been announced as joining Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci for a retelling of Jack And The Beanstalk, called Jack The Giant Killer.

The Bryan Singer-directed film will also star Bill Nighy and Nicholas Hoult.
