Scientists to analyze catch from weekend Alabama fishing rodeo for oil, other hazards

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. — Federal scientists will conduct chemical analyses of fish caught during this weekend’s Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s mobile laboratory will be stationed on Dauphin Island for the three-day event and will collect samples from hundreds of fish brought to the scales.

About 40 fish per day will be given a “rapid assessment,” which includes a battery of analyses designed to detect oil pollution compounds, plus other hazards such as mercury and red tide bacteria.

More than 3,000 anglers are expected to weigh fish during the rodeo. Most of the fish samples collected will be processed within weeks.
