India traders strike against foreign giants

Shops around India closed their doors today in a strike called by the Confederation of All India Traders in protest at the government’s decision to let foreign firms set up shops in major cities and own up to 51 per cent of supermarkets and 100 per cent of single-brand shops.

Hundreds of traders marching in New Delhi burned an effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and waved signs calling for the policy to be scrapped.

One sign depicted foreign investment as a raging dinosaur.

Similar rallies were staged in Mumbai and elsewhere.
