Catherine Zeta-Jones bipolar disorder: Jameela Jamil says star is just suffering 'menopause'

Many of her fans have reacted with concern and surprise over the news that Catherine Zeta-Jones was admitted to a psychiatric facility.

But others are less worried - and have put the whole episode down to hormones.

T4 presenter Jameela Jamil courted controversy this morning when she quipped that the actress was simply suffering from the menopause.

Backlash: Her quips weren't deemed so funny by other followers who hit back at her making light of the actress' condition

The TV host wrote on her Twitter page: 'Catherine Zeta-Jones has just been admitted to rehab for bipolar disorder. I GUARANTEE it's just the menopause! Makes 40+ crazy.'

Jameela, 25, received a backlash from followers and later deleted the tweets.

But despite removing her posts from the site, the 25-year-old stood by her comments.

'OK bur I'm actually probably right in this instance as any woman who suddenly develops bipolar in her mid 40s usually suffering menopause (sic).'

She added: 'None the less I shall remove comment. I would never disrespect mental illness, I was purely speculating about her hormones.'

But far from being a sudden revelation, medical experts say Catherine, 41, will have been suffering from the illness for some time, and that the manic depression she has been treated for has been triggered by the stress of her husband Michael Douglas’s battle with cancer.

The actress was admitted last Wednesday to the Silver Hill psychiatric hospital, where she reportedly shared a ward with alcoholics and drug addicts.

She stayed for five days, joining 10 to 15 others in the £770-a-day detox centre at the hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Her publicist confirmed that she had received mental health treatment to help her cope with her traumatic personal life.

‘After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check into a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder,’ she said.

‘She’s feeling great and looking forward to starting work this week on two upcoming films.’
