William and Kate movie panned by Twitter users after Channel 5 premiere

It's the type of love story that has kept the public rapt for centuries.

But despite the makers of the Prince William and Kate Middleton TV movie hoping they had a sure-fire hit on their hands, the movie has flopped.

And, after the William & Kate premiere on Channel 5 today, viewers took to Twitter in their thousands to comment on just how bad the movie, starring Nico Evers-Swindell and Camilla Luddington as the royal pair, was.

One viewer tweeted: 'Have just seen 1 second of Will and Kate the movie & can confirm it is the most excruciating & awful thing that mankind has ever created.'

And another added: 'Watching some of this terrible Will & Kate movie. I don't know where to begin on how bad this is! Laughable and unbelievable.'

The viewers' verdict comes after some critics labelled the made-for-TV movie 'toe-curlingly, teeth-furringly, pillow-bitingly ghastly'.

MailOnline's Lauren Paxman called the film 'truly terrible', adding that it is, 'a shoddily cast, poorly executed, badly edited and surprisingly boring account of Kate’s route to royalty.'

However, while the majority of viewers despaired over the quality of the film, others wrote on Twitter they had enjoyed the 110 minute movie because it 'was so bad, it was good'.

And the Evening Standard's Richard Godwin concurred, adding: 'Critics in America have panned this movie as a cheesy chick-flick, but there are positives.

'It is recognisably a film, in that it takes place on a screen.

'Events run in a forward direction.'

One viewer wrote on Twitter: 'Kate and Will movie just awful but surprisingly watchable.'

While another said: 'Kate and Will - The Movie...brilliantly awful.

'Lets see more low budget films on C5.'

And despite the huge amount of negative press surrounding the film, Nico Evers-Swindell, who played William in the film, said the movie was intended to be light-hearted.

He said: 'There's a good reason I'm not reading the reviews. You're dealing with the golden boy and golden girl of Britain right now.

'This wasn't a British production, Tom Hooper didn't direct this, this isn't The King's Speech. This isn't an in-depth look at the royal family.'

He added: 'I don't know [what] anyone could have expected in 30 days of development, from a network that's known for romance.

'It was always intended to be a fun ride. It's a light romance, a love story at the heart, and just a jolly good time.'

William & Kate is out now on DVD.
