UN officials scrubbed the name of a Canadian man accused by the US of being an al-Qaida terrorist from a security council blacklist today.
Sudanese-born Abousfian Abdelrazik was arrested but not charged during a 2003 visit home to see his mother.
The Bush administration added him to the blacklist and a separate US “no-fly” list in 2006.
Mr Abdelrazik has already been formally cleared by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian spooks of any terrorism-related allegations.
As a result of Wednesday’s decision “the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in security council resolution 1989 no longer apply” to Mr Abdelrazik.
His lawyer Paul Champ said: “He was just ecstatic and shouting, and I could hear the cheers in the background with his children.”
